Over the next few posts we’re going to talk about how to add interest to your winter landscape. There are so many ways! The most obvious are to add plants, right? Other ideas include adding hardscapes, like beautiful stone retaining walls. You could also add an arbor, made of metal or even just cedar wood. Or even simpler, maybe you can add a focal point using a garden statue. We’ll go into all of these in a bit more detail to help you come up with ideas for your garden. Winter is such a great time to take a look at your garden as a whole. Since most of your plants are slumbering, waiting for spring, it’s a quite time, free of the rush of spring and summer maintenance. The beds aren’t begging to be weeded, and your lawn isn’t trying to swallow your pathways. So take advantage of it! Make this time about planning for what you want to add and change. The emptiness of the winter garden allows you to look at the structure, and the flow. Why don’t you take a few minutes every weekend, with your coffee in hand, and stroll around your garden. What’s missing in your winter landscape? Do you need a little red “pop!” of a coral bark maple over in the corner? Could you use some evergreen foliage of Blue Star juniper around those boulders? Would a bench under your maple tree really make you happy? Over the next couple of weeks we will post our thoughts on “Winter Interest”, as we’ll call it. So check back often! Oh fun, this means I don’t have to do ‘real’ work, right?
Take a look at this great article on MNN (Mother Nature Network) about using native plants to create curb appeal that is vibrant and alive instead of just lawn area. The idea here is that the notion of curb appeal being an open lawn that shows that house and nothing else, is really outdated. Pick plants that embrace the house’s charm, add to its architecture, and compliment its colors. Living in Georgia, especially here in Athens, GA we have an abundance of native plants to use in landscaping. Green Peak Landscaping can help you design and install your native landscape. We can also help you maintain your garden, keeping it simple, clean, and beautiful. Get in touch with us today! 706/714/2397
